Classic Checkered Hat and Scarf

This hat and scarf set is reminiscent of classic patterns seen in suits and other garments and features a checkered pattern woven in plain weave. The hat is woven on a wider warp than the scarf, so you’ll warp the loom twice. The direct warping method makes this process quick and easy. The hat weaves quickly and can be customized to any head size. Because it uses small amounts of yarn in the warp and weft, the hat is perfect for experimenting with pattern and fiber. The scarf is just as quick to finish as the hat. Enjoy the classic checkered hat and scarf set!

Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool, worsted weight, 465 yards/8 oz., in Natural and Nature’s Brown, one skein of each color. This is ample for both the hat and scarf.

Hat
Warp the loom with 4 ends of Natural alternating with 4 ends of Brown, for 72 warp ends.
In plain weave, weave four picks of Natural alternating with four picks of Brown. This creates a simple, classic checkered pattern. Weave until you have at least 22" of fabric. Because the hat will be be sewn, hemstitching is optional.
Remove the fabric from the loom. Fold your fabric in half and measure 11" from the fold and sew a ½" seam. Your fabric is now in a loop. Mark into four equal sections along one edge. Using a needle and thread, tack the marks together in the center. You now have four smaller loops meeting in the center. Sew from the center out at a 45 degree angle (about 2.75" from the top edge) on each of the loops. Trim the excess, leaving about ½", turn right side out and wash.
Feel free to add a pompom to the top of the hat for a little extra fun.
Scarf
Warp the loom with 4 ends of Natural alternating with 4 ends of Brown, for 40 warp ends.
Be sure you have about 8" warp at the beginning of the scarf for the twisted fringe. Weave four picks of Natural, leaving a tail 3-4 times the width of the warp. Hemstitch using the tail. Weave, alternating four picks of Brown with four picks of Natural, until you can no longer get a clean shed. Hemstitch the end.
Remove the scarf from the loom. Trim the ends to 8" or desired length and twist the fringe. Wash until lightly fulled.
