Keep the nip off your ears and protect your hairstyle when the wind blows. Made from 6 patterned squares, this headband fits teens and adult women. For a very warm ear muff, you can weave 12 squares and sew them into a double-layer band.
Project Specs
Finished size: 3-1/2" wide and 10" long when assembled and lying flat
Weave structure: plain weave with floats
The squares have a simple pattern. Wind the 3 layers as you normally would, then weave the 4th layer like this (shown in dark green in the diagram):
U = under, O = over, = repeat
Row 1: U1, O1 across ending with U1 (plain weave)
Row 2: U3, O1 7 times, U3
Row 3: U1, O1, U3, O1 7 times, U1
Rows 4–15: repeat rows 2 and 3
Row 16: plain weave

Directions
Weaving
Weave 6 squares for a single-layer band or 12 squares for a double-layer band. Mark the right side at the same corner of each square after you take it off the loom—this will make it easier to line up the weaving patterns before you seam the headband. Weave in tails on all squares.
Assembly
Lay out the squares so the weaving pattern runs the same way. Double overcast or slipstitch together to make a 1 x 6 rectangle. Weave in all tails from seaming the squares.
Lay out the rectangle right side up. At the left end of the rectangle, fold the short edge in half with the fold at the bottom, like the letter U. At the right end of the rectangle, fold the short edge in half with the fold at the top, like an upside-down U.
To make the twist, bring all the short edges together and align them at the top and bottom. (Don't worry about the rest of the headband for now. It will get all crumpled until you sew the twist, then it will unfold and look perfect.) You now have 4 layers of fabric: a U next to an upside-down U.
Rearrange the layers so one U fits inside the other. Align the layers at top and bottom. Whipstitch through all 4 layers and weave in the tails. Unfold the band and turn it right side out.
Notes
Variations
Double Layered Headband: Sew 2 sets of 1 x 6 rectangles. With right sides together, sew together along the long sides. Turn right sides out. Repeat steps 2-4 from Assembly, sewing together 8 layers for the twist.
Two-Color Headband: Weave 3 squares of each color. Place 3 squares of color A, then 3 squares of color B or alternate between the colors. Assemble as explained above.
