How has the Matchless spinning wheel changed?

We introduced the Matchless spinning wheel in 1987, with a single treadle. In 1996, we began making double treadle wheels. The treadles rested on a metal treadle support. The mother-of-all (MOA) had a Scotch tension rod on its right side that turned to adjust take-up.

We have offered limited-edition cherry Matchless wheels to celebrate some special occasions:

  • in 2009, for the 40th anniversary of Schacht Spindle Company
  • in 2013, for Barry Schacht's 70th birthday
  • in 2019, for the 50th anniversary of Schacht Spindle Company

At some point between 2006 and 2009, we replaced the metal treadle support with a wooden treadle support and brace.

In 2012, we changed the MOA design: the MOA has a groove to hold a spring-and-string for Scotch tension, and the front maiden attaches to the MOA with a quick release lever. The spinner turns a Scotch tension knob to adjust take-up.

In 2016, we replaced leather treadle hinges with PVC hinges.

In 2020, we discontinued the single treadle model.

In 2023, the front maiden was modified to hold a plastic bearing instead of a bronze one. If you need to replace the bearing, contact Customer Service.
