Getting some beautiful new yarns in from Berocco prompted this exploration of yarn and color. The warp is Lang Noelle, a super soft, light-as-air, chainette yarn, 79% merino wool and 21% recycled nylon. The weft is Aerial, a slighty fuzzy fine 65% mohair/35% silk yarn.

For the warp, I made ½” stripes of Brown and wider stripes in Gold. These fairly strong colors are muted by the Eggplant and Fine Wine weft. What an exercise in seeing what happens when colors cross in weaving! I wasn’t fond of the Gold on its own, but love what happened when crossed with the two weft colors.

In weaving, I wove longer weft blocks, for an elongated windowpane outlined by Brown. Weaving progresses quickly with a light beat at 12 ppi.

I put on a longer warp so that I could weave a sample first before completing the project. Here are the details for creating a wonderfully airy and soft scarf you’ll wear again and again.

Weaving

Weave plain weave. Use a light, even beat. Weave 5 picks of Brown Noelle, 3” (measured under tension) of Eggplant, 5 picks of Brown Noelle, 3” of Fine Wine. Repeat this color order to the end, finishing with 5 picks of Brown Noelle. If desired, hemstitch beginning and end.

Finishing

Hand wash in warm water. I used Dawn detergent. Rinse well and lay flat to dry. Use a press cloth and firm pressure while scarf is still slightly damp.
